A Wee Bout With Gas Colic

My bad boy got a bit of a belly ache on Saturday night and really scared his momma!
Ok, he’s not bad. He’s actually pretty wonderful. We’ve had an awesome month filled with lots of riding. We now have a solid canter with snappy transitions and even have our leads mostly worked out. And we’ve been popping over crossrails and little 18″ verticals. And he’s starting to carry himself better; getting on the bit and rounding through his neck and back.
I left the barn at 4:00 Saturday afternoon after a short …

Ace Settles In & Goes On A Trail Ride

Ace has had one week and one day in his new home and is doing exceptionally well. We even went on our very first trail ride last Friday!
Moving Day
Moving day dawned cold, windy, rainy, and dropping in temperature. While it was gross for loading up my jump equipment and horse, it fit the mood as we prepared to leave our former home. The new barn owner and I took her trailer to get Ace, and after visiting with my friends for a while, it was time to head out.
We didn’t …

Big news in our world this week: Ace is moving down the road to a new barn on Saturday!
It’s a bittersweet time for us. I’m very excited for where we’re going and the new opportunities we’ll have, but I’m also very sad to be leaving where we are.
His current home is with some of my very closest friends, and we’ve had a wonderful experience out there. I couldn’t have afforded to keep him for the last year without their generosity. And I couldn’t have gotten through Ace’s early training without …

The Memory Of An Elephant – In A Good Way!

First, I’d like to apologize for my extended absence. My hubby and I were finally able to close on our house two weeks ago, so I’ve been in the process of finishing packing, moving, unpacking, and settling in. On top of that, it’s marching band season for my band director and his band, so I’ve spent the last three Fridays at football games. And (to add to the newness), I’ve started doing evening feed and bringing in at a local 25-horse boarding stable two nights a week.
In the midst of …

Well, it’s not Ace’s stifle after all. When he came out for a routine float, I also had the vet check out Ace’s iffy hind end. Turns out he damaged something on his fetlock or pastern. Xrays were clean, so I was thrilled it’s not arthritis. It looks like he’s injured his suspensory branch and will need at least 2-3 months off to heal.
It’s a big deal, so I’ve been sharing about it over on my main site. See the vet visit in pictures, and be sure to check back …

Ace had two very special visitors last night: my mom and my sister Sheryl.
My younger sisters are identical twins, and are just 20 months younger than I am. Mom had them on horses from the time they were young also. We grew up riding together, and even managed to compete against each other with good attitudes. Unfortunately, the horse bug didn’t quite bite them the way it did me. While they aren’t riding regularly, they do get into the saddle every once in a while and are still very nice …

It’s been a crazy few weeks in the Baker household; my hubby was gone for 10 days, we’ve had some weddings and some traveling, we’ve been finalizing stuff with the house (check out pictures of our house here), packing to move to said house, prepping for a week vacation, and keeping tabs on my lame horse.
Ace is doing well. He’s not completely sound, but I’d say he’s 90 percent of the way there. I’ve been grooming him, loving on him, and lunging him just enough to see how he’s moving …
